Laser Hair Removal in the Algarve: Start in Autumn, Be Smooth by Summer

Why six visits, what it costs in Vilamoura, what it feels like, and the one thing you must not do between sessions.

Laser Hair Removal in the Algarve: Start in Autumn, Be Smooth by Summer

The clinic’s laser diary fills from October to June because it is the perfect time to start your hair free life. No more painful wax, no more painful razor rash. All gone in just 6 visits. This article will show you why.

How does laser hair removal actually work?

The laser sends a pulse of light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair shaft, travels down to the follicle and heats it enough to stop it producing a new hair. The skin around the hair reflects most of that wavelength, so it is not affected. The reason it will not work in a single session is because hair grows in cycles, and the laser only disables follicles that are in the growth phase at the time of the session. Roughly a fifth of your hairs are in that phase at once, which is why one session gives you a patchy result and six give you a lasting one.

We use the Elite iQ Pro by Cynosure. Two important details about this machine:

  • Two wavelengths. The 755 nm alexandrite is the workhorse for lighter skin; the 1064 nm Nd:YAG goes deeper and is safe for darker and olive skin, which covers most of the Algarve. The device reads your skin with its SkinTel melanin reader and we match the settings to you, not to a chart.
  • Built-in cooling. The handpiece chills the skin as it fires. What you feel is a quick warm snap, like an elastic band, not a burn.

What does it cost in the Algarve?

At Timeless Beauty in Vilamoura, laser hair removal starts from €20 per session for small areas such as toes and fingers. Larger areas cost more, and the full list by area is on our booking site. Sessions take about 30 minutes for a typical area, longer for legs or a full back.

Two things are worth knowing about the price. First, think of it as a full treatment plan. Six sessions of a small area are still less than a year of waxing (and much less painful). Second, a course bought here is often a fraction of what the same device costs in a London or Dublin clinic, which is why we see visitors who time their trips around sessions.

What happens at the first appointment?

  1. A short consultation. Skin type, hair colour, medication (some antibiotics and acne treatments make skin light-sensitive), tanning habits, and what you want treated.
  2. A test patch if your skin is darker or recently tanned.
  3. The treatment itself. You wear goggles, the area is marked, and the handpiece moves across it in overlapping pulses. A bikini line takes a few minutes, full leg treatment up to half an hour.
  4. Aftercare. The skin may be slightly pink for a few hours. Cool gel, SPF, and no hot baths, sauna or gym that day.

How to prepare, and the one rule between sessions

  • Shave the area the day before. The laser needs the pigment in the follicle, not a hair above the skin that will singe.
  • No sun and no self-tan for two weeks beforehand. This is the most important rule, and it is the reason autumn is the season.
  • Do not wax, pluck or epilate between sessions. Those remove the hair the laser needs to target. Shaving is fine, as often as you like.
  • Come without lotions, deodorant or makeup on the area.

Why we will not laser a tan

A tan is pigment in the skin. The laser cannot tell it from pigment in the hair, so over tanned skin we either turn the energy down, which gives you a weak session, or risk a burn and a patch of darker or lighter skin that takes months to fade. We are strict about this because the alternative is a complaint we cannot fix quickly. In summer, people who are mid-course either pause or keep the treated area strictly covered. In winter the problem disappears, and so does the waiting.

Which areas do people treat?

Women: upper lip and chin, underarms, bikini line, half or full legs, and forearms. Men: back and shoulders, chest, neck and beard line (the beard shaping that stops ingrown hairs), and increasingly ears and between the brows.

Does it hurt, really?

Less than waxing and far less than people expect. The cooling machine helps desensitise the skin. The upper lip and bikini line are the most sensitive, and each takes under five minutes. Nobody has ever asked to stop partway through.

“She took lots of time to explain everything to me in great detail so I felt comfortable and informed. The results have been excellent and just what I asked for.” Jen, Google review

Frequently asked questions

Is it permanent? Laser gives long-term hair reduction. After a full course most people have a small amount of fine regrowth and come once a year or so for a top-up.

I have blonde or grey hair. Will it work? No laser works well on hair without pigment. For the odd pale hair, electrolysis is the best solution, and we will tell you so at the consultation rather than sell you a course which will not work for you.

Can I have laser treatment if I am pregnant? We do not treat during pregnancy, as a precaution. Breastfeeding is fine.

Can I have laser and PicoSure skin treatments in the same season? Yes, and many people do. Hair removal and sun damage repair are both great to do in the autumn after the summer sun has reduced its strength. We create a plan for the entire course which will ensure you are ready for next summer.

How do I book? Pick your area on the booking site and choose a time. The first session includes the consultation, so there is nothing to do beforehand except shave and stay out of the sun.
